ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

The biggest disadvantages of the catalytic converter are “it works well at high temperature ”.When the engine is cold or at normal temperature & also after the cold start, the catalytic converter does nothing to control pollution.

The high-temperature point of an engine is near engine place. If we move the converter to near the engine, that means the converter will heat up very fast due to exhaust gases & fuel burn. This may solve the problem but may reduce the total lifetime of converter due to exposing to high temperature. To solve that temperature issue & some manufacture keeps the converter near the front passenger seat to maintain a distance which will not harm the converter catalyst & converter can be heated up very fast & easily.

Also, another solution is preheating the catalytic converter, but for this another unit i.e. electric resistance is necessary. But again another problem arises with the 12-volt electrical system because the system doesn’t produce enough energy to heat converter fast enough. People will never wait for the converter to heat up.But in bigger/heavy vehicles, they produce enough amount of energy to heat converter very fast & easily.

Also the another problem with the catalytic converter is with the diesel engine.Because diesel engine runs at a cooler temperature than a petrol engine.In this case, the catalytic converter doesn’t work effetely to reduce NOX . But after converter is heated, everything works fine.

UREA DOSING

Urea dosing is another solution of catalytic converter problems. Urea is also known as carbamide, which is an organic compound made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen & hydrogen. It is actually found in the urine of mammals & amphibians. It produces nitrogen & water vapor when reacts with nitrogen oxide, also reduce percentages of NOX presence in the exhaust.


In this process, Urea Solution is injected into the exhaust pipe before it gets converted. So that the Urea will react with NOX to produce nitrogen & water vapor which will dispose more & more about 90 of the NOX amount from the exhaust gas.

ACHIVEMENT OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

For construction equipment’s also catalytic converter are used. 
Also used in natural gas-powered vehicles, methanol-powered vehicles & also ethanol && propene powered vehicle.

APPLICATION OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

In 4 wheeler – Cars, bus, trucks etc.
In 2 wheeler-scooters, motorcycle etc.
In heavy machines –locomotive/trains, construction pieces of equipment.
Home appliances – Gas cylinder etc.
